How to Use FTP
You can now directly FTP your files to your web site on GreenNet. In order to be able to do this, you will need to use an FTP client program. The GreenNet Internet Tools includes WS-FTP, which you can use, and is used in the examples here. If you are using another program (eg Fetch on the Mac), the same configuration applies, but the procedures may be slightly different. Contact us if you need help with this. If you don’t have a copy of WSFTP already you can download one from the GreenNet web site at:
or
We suggest you have an exact copy of the directories and files on your local PC as you want them to be on your web site.
You will receive an account name and password from GreenNet. You need to configure your FTP client with this information. For the purposes of this explanation, we will use an imaginary user called ecowhat. The screen below shows an example where the address is www.ecowhat.org.uk
(N.B. it could be ecowhat.gn.apc.org , or www.ecowhat.com – whatever the address, it should be put in Host Name/Address field.)
When you start WS-FTP it will display the session profile of the last used session. Click on the NEW button and enter the following information in the Session Properties ‘General’ screen.

Profile name: GreenNet Web Server
Host name: www.ecowhat.org.uk (use your web site name)
Host type: auto detect
User ID: ecowhat (use your FTP user name)
Password: ********* (use your FTP password)
You should make sure that Anonymous Login option is unchecked. If others have access to your PC and you do not want to have access to your web site, you should also uncheck Save Password. Otherwise you may find it convenient to not have to enter the password each time you connect.

Then in the ‘Startup’ screen enter:
Initial Remote Host Directory: www.ecowhat.org (use your web site name here)
(if left blank, the FTP may take longer and you will need to double click on the site name to see contents)
Initial Local Directory: c:\website (where you keep your html files on your PC)
The initial directories are where you will be when you first connect. The remote directory is your directory on our server. You can to set the Local initial directory to be the directory path and name where your web files are stored on your PC. When you have entered the details and checked them, you should then click on the ‘Apply’ button. Now you are ready to connect and transfer files.
You should now make a dial-up connection. Then go back to WS-FTP window and click on the ‘Connect’ button, and it will connect to the web server. The remote system window should now display the contents of your web site. If this fails to happen, you should look at the status window near the bottom of the screen - it is only two lines high, so you will probably have to scroll up to see the error message - look for something like invalid login - which indicates you may have typed your password in incorrectly.

Navigating Directories
The WS-FTP program has two sides. The left side represents your PC - the local system. The right side represents GreenNet’s web server - the remote system. The windows at the top tell you which directory you are in on each system, and the windows at the bottom show the directories and files contained in the current directory. You can change to a directory by double clicking on its name, and click on the green arrow to go up a directory level.
Transferring Files
You can select files and or directories from your PC in the left-hand window (use SHIFT-click or CTRL-click to select multiple files). For HTML or text files select the ASCII mode radio button or for graphics files, select Binary mode. Then click on the -> button between the two windows to transfer the files. As each file transfers you will be shown its progress. After all the files have transferred there will be a slight pause while the right hand window refreshes itself.
Deleting Files
There may now be files on the web site, you no longer want. To delete them highlight files in the right-hand window and then click on the Delete button to the right of that window. You can also rename files in a similar way.
Checking Your Site
Once you have finished updating your site/uploading your files, you should start Netscape (or another web browser) and load up your home page and check to see if everything has gone smoothly. You may need to hit the ‘Reload’ button to make sure you are getting the latest version of the pages. If you find missing/broken graphics, you can simply upload them again using WS-FTP. If you find broken links or other problems, you should go off line, fix the problem on your copy of the files, test it out and then upload the files again. We recommend that you keep a backup of your site on your PC and occasionally copy it to floppy disk(s) and keep this in a safe place.
